Background Information

Skanska is one of the world's leading construction groups with expertise in construction, development of commercial and residential projects, and public-private partnerships. The company had begun a massive hospital expansion including a new emergency department tower in San Antonio and was proud of many aspects of the expansion.

The Challenge

The hospital staff had developed a close relationship with the construction company and the many contractors and subcontractors who worked on the site for more than two years. Project managers at Skanska wanted to thank the hospital staff and management for the help they had offered throughout the construction process. Skanska also wanted to thank the community for its support, while showing off the beautiful expansion.

Artisan3's Solution

Skanska management spoke with Artisan3 project managers, and together they developed the idea for a five- to seven-minute video that showcased the architecture, new technology, and construction at the hospital. Artisan3 suggested two shooting dates, the first as the main skeleton of the expansion was completed, and the second after the work was finished and ready to turn over to the hospital staff. Using Artisan3’s editing capabilities, footage from the two shoots would work together to tell the story of the construction process.

Final Product

The final video uses mixed media including video, photos, and various animations to highlight the building's unique facets, including the four-story tower and the new emergency room cantilever. The video also describes the challenges that Skanska faced, such as how to accommodate the large amount of workers and subcontractors, as well as the huge challenge of minimizing distractions to the hospital while construction was underway. Through interviews with construction management and hospital staff, Artisan3 told the story of the entire construction process, using photos and special effects to create the illusion that an Artisan3 camera crew was on site at all times. Special animation and music, along with professional voice narration, made the final video an excellent gift to the hospital.

End Results

The video, "The New Northeast Methodist Hospital," was played at the ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by hospital staff, construction management, and many distinguished members of the community. Management at Skanska reviewed the video and appreciated even more than before the excellent job performed by their crews. They commissioned Artisan3 to produce another video for their new hospital in Houston. Skanska also uses the video as a promotional tool.

Title: “The New NICU”
Location: Houston, TX
Delivery: DVD with custom artwork and packaging

Background Information

Skanska is one of the world's leading construction groups with expertise in construction, development of commercial and residential projects, and public-private partnerships. The company had begun a significant hospital expansion in Houston to create a new wing for their neonatal intensive care unit, also known as the NICU.

The Challenge

Skanska's project managers had done a great job communicating with the hospital staff to coordinate the amount of distraction the expansion would wreak, as the construction work was taking place near the current NICU. The project managers wanted to communicate their gratitude to the nurses and staff, and to present a video to them when the project was complete. They also wanted to thank the community for its support, while showing off their new facility.

Artisan3's Solution

Skanska had used Artisan3's video services for another hospital renovation and wanted to create a similar video for this project. Because Artisan3 already had a working relationship with Skanska, the flow of ideas and concepts for the video came easily. Artisan3 and Skanska together developed ideas for a five- to seven-minute video that showcased the architecture, new technology, and construction of the NICU. The project only required one shooting date because Skanska's project management had already documented much of the project with their digital cameras.

Final Product

The final video uses mixed media including video, photos, and various animations to highlight the building's technologies, many developed exclusively for this NICU. Some especially interesting aspects included a sound-reducing overall design, noise-reducing floors, and a more personal feel for patients and their families. Doctors and hospital staff provided on-camera interviews, which told the story of the building process and how they played a role in the design of the new NICU.
